Page 10- 11 Today is the first day of school, and right now we're just waiting for the teacher to finish the seating chart as soon as possible. So, I thought I might as well write something in the notebook to pass the time instead of sitting idly. By the way, here is a piece of good advice for you: On the first day of school, you have got to be really careful about where you sit. You walk into the classroom and just throw your stuff down on any desk and the next thing you can hear the teacher saying: “I hope you all like where you're sitting, because these are your permanent seats.” ‘Oh noooo!!!’ So in this class, I had to stay with Chris Hosey in front of me and Lionel James at back of me. Jason Brill came late and almost sat to my right, but luckily I stopped that at the last second. ‘Is this seat taken?’ ‘Yes! Yes!’ Next semester, I should just find a sit in the middle of a bunch of chicks as soon as I step in the room. Though, this means that I didn't learn anything from last year.
PAGE 12 - 13 Guy, don't know WHAT is up with girls these days. It used to be a lot simpler in elementary school. if you were the fastest runner in your class, you got all the girls. And in the fifth grade, the fastest runner was Ronnie McCoy.
Nowadays, it's more complicated. Now, girls care about the kind of clothes you wear or how rich you are or if you have a cute butt or whatever. And kids like Ronnie McCoy are scratching their heads.
The most popular boy in my grade is Bryce Anderson. The thing that really bothering is that I have ALWAYS been interested in girls, but kids like Bryce have only come around in the last couple of years. I remember how Bryce used to be in elementary school.
"Girls are pain in the neck! Yeah! I don't think girls are pain in the neck!"
But of course now I don't get any credit for being at the side of girls all this time. Like I said, Bryce is the most popular kid in our grade, so that leaves all the rest of us striving for being second. THE CHAMPION IS DEFINITE, WHO IS THE SECOND?
The best I can figure is that I'm somewhere around 52nd or 53rd most popular this year. But the good news is that I'm about to move up one step because Charlie Davies is above me, is getting his braces next week.
MY COMMENTS:
I knew this book thanks to my field work because it was very popular book among students in primary school. While translating this book I enjoyed a lot. It had an informal language and simple sentences. While translating this episode, I tried to be comprehensible and simplify my language. I had fun while translating because the words were from daily life and I benefited from my background knowledge easily. I tried to think according to our culture while translating but of course, paying attention to connection with the native language. Therefore, I can say that it was mostly sense for sense translation for example, I hope you all like where you're sitting, because these are your permanent seats’ I tried to give exact emotion and message in other language. In addition, while translating, I had a sentence like 'Sampyion belli ikinci kim’. I had difficulty in translating this because I did not know it in English, so I made word for word. THE CHAMPION IS DEFINITE, WHO IS THE SECOND? ( I checked it from the original translation how it is tanslated, but there was not any translated sentence on it.) I think my language and translation is appropriate for young readers. Lastly, I tried to give the jokes or idioms considering the higher level of vocabulary knowledge .
